Georgia Tanner
Director
Pretty Pictures, Engaging Stories
I am an award-winning film Director of nationally aired commercials, branded content for webisodes, episodic television programs, as well as an independent movie.
I grew up in the south, one of four daughters, with a strong mother who was an army nurse, and a soft-spoken father who rarely got a word in at the dinner table. I sat for hours in my older sisters’ bedroom listening to love songs on their record-player and watching them apply eyeliner. Sundays were spent at my Grandparents old farmhouse where stories were told and laughter drifted through the screened windows on summer nights. I had no choice but to become a hopeless romantic.
After art school and dressing mannequins for my grown-up job, I found out there were people who dressed models and actors for film and commercials. I wanted in. I started out in wardrobe, but quickly drifted over into the art department. Working as an Art Director, I started seeing the bigger picture of how the locations or sets, the talent, the lighting, the blocking, the camera moves – oh, just everything, came together to perfectly tell the story. I was hooked.
I started out wanting to shoot pretty pictures and tell endearing, aspirational stories. I have found out it is just as exciting and magical to tell really difficult stories where the mascara runs and the heroine makes the hard choice. And sometimes the ending hurts.
Along the way I have added producer and writer to my credits, because if you are going to direct, you have to roll your sleeves up to make sure the story is told well. I love working with smart people. I love film because you are constantly learning something new. Every time.
I jumped from short to longer format a few years ago, directing The List. And that took me into swamps and abandoned back roads, directing true crime thrillers for Swamp Murders and Your Worst Nightmare. I had no idea I would love it so much. But I do. Let’s tell another story.
